Burgh Castle and Breydon Water Burgh Castle and Breydon Water

Burgh Castle

Burgh Castle is situated on the River Waveney, where it meets Breydon Water, which in turn is around 4 miles from Great Yarmouth. Burgh Castle acted as a coastal defence in Roman times. Over hundreds of years, the estuary it was positioned on, silted up leaving Burgh Castle marooned from the sea. The "inland sea" which is left is called Breydon Water. To get to Norwich from here, a 45 minute journey, you would need to travel through Great Yarmouth and then out using the A47.

Things to see and do:
Burgh Castle does indeed have a castle, in the form of a fort built overlooking Breydon Water. This huge flint built structure would have acted as a look out for invaders from abroad, in it's seafront days. Three of the walls are intact and make an impressive site. The fourth side collapsed years ago. The view across Breydon from here is wonderful. Being on the doorstep of Breydon Water, you have access to delightful water's edge walks to see the wildlife of the area, including cormorants, herons, egrets, all manner of waterfowl, wading birds and even the occasional sight of a seal. Great Yarmouth with it's all the fun of the fair rides, museums and piers and a wonderful sandy beach is just a few minutes away by car.

Local pubs, restaurants:
The Fisherman's Inn is on the banks of the river with it's own terrace. Watching the sun go down across Breydon from here is a delight. The bar has a good sized food menu. The Queens Head, set on the High Road is an alternative. It's popular with locals and visitors, with a good choice of food menu and occasional live entertainment. The Kingfisher Bar and Restaurant caters for residents of the nearby Breydon Water Caravan Park, and is open to non-residents. There are two more public houses in nearby Belton, The Queens Head and The Tavern.

Cafes and takeaways:

The Golden Fish, a Chinese takeaway is close to the caravan park. A further Chinese and a Kebab takeaway are in nearby Belton.

Other Shops:
Burgh Castle Post Office is a small general store. A Tesco express and an independent pharmacy are situated in nearby Belton.
