The village of Cantley sits on the banks of the River Yare and is around 25 minutes drive from Norwich using the A47 and the B1140. Cantley also has its own train station with direct connections to Norwich and Lowestoft. The village has a population of around 750 people and is famous for its huge sugar beet factory which operates on the banks of the Yare. Production starts in October and continues through the winter. The summer months are mainly used for maintenance with little going on to the untrained eye.
Things to see and do:
A walk around the Cantley area has been put together by the Wherry Line which takes in the sugar factory, the ruins of St Edmunds church and Cantley Marshes where you can come across wildfowl, waders and raptors. The walk is 4.7 miles in distance and directions can be downloaded
HERE. Look for the "Cantley Walk" link. It is easy to get around Norfolk from the train station in Cantley. The fine city of Norwich, with it's castle, museum, cathedral and multiple shopping centres will easily fill a day's visit. Take the train in the other direction to Oulton Broad or Lowestoft. Oulton Broad is a large expanse of water on which all manner of water activities can be found, including self-drive boats, passenger launches and dinghy racing. On most Thursdays in the summer, Oulton Broad hosts speedboat racing. A little further down the line is Lowestoft, the eastern most point of mainland England. This charming holiday resort is more gentle and laid back than it's neighbour up the coast, Great Yarmouth.
Local pubs, restaurants:
The Reedcutters can be found on the banks of the River Yare, offering a good choice of food from it's menu, served either in the bar or it's restaurant. The Rampant Horse and the Cock Tavern are each both a five minute drive away, and are well thought of for their food offerings.
Cafes and takeaways:
The nearest cafe is at the Moulton Nurseries Garden Centre, around 10 minutes drive away. No takeaways in the vicinity
Other Shops:
The Freethorpe General Stores is your closest for provisions, and is a seven minute drive from Cantley.
