Coltishall and the adjoining little hamlets of Great Hautbois and Little Hautbois, are reached by the A1150 from Norwich, which is a 15 to 20 minute drive away. Coltishall is a sizeable village, and was once noted for it's RAF base, which is now closed. It has a population of around 1,500, and is spread long the B1354 Wroxham Road. Wroxham itself is a mere 10 minutes by car.
Things to see and do:
The village lines the north bank of the River Bure which makes it ideal for pleasant countryside walks. The riverside walk to the now disused locks is a delight. The Recruiting Sergeant Public House has a couple of detailed walks on it's website
HERE. Coltishall was once an important wherry (sailing barge) trading point. As such you cannot help but notice the affluence in the period shops and houses of the area, many of which can be seen from the main road. Dayboat hire is available from nearby Wroxham, for those who want to spend a few hours on the river. Also in Wroxham, is the terminus for the Bure Valley Railway, a narrow gauge affair which runs up to Aylsham and is a pleasant afternoon distraction.
Local pubs, restaurants, cafes
and takeaways:
The Rising Sun and the
Kings Head are by the Coltishall Common and are both popular with locals and visitors. The latter tends to be a little more "up market" as is the
Recruiting Sergeant which is located towards the village centre.
The Red Lion is half way between the two and offers evening entertainment. All four pubs offer good choice menus.
Cafes and takeaways:
The Red Lion operates a cafe and is open for breakfasts. A Piece of Cake, is a tearoom in the village centre - well thought of for afternoon tea. Chinese, Indian and Fish & Chips takeaways are all available near the centre of the village.
Other Shops:
There are two convenience stores in the centre (one incorporating a Post Office), together with two butchers, a green grocer and a hair dressers. A medical practice operates in the village. There are two ATM cash machines.
