The tiny village of Geldeston lies around 3 miles by river, beyond the town of Beccles. It is a sleepy village without shops though it does boast two public houses. A visit to Norwich by car would take you around 25 minutes using the A146. The village has a population of around 400 people.
Things to see and do:
The nearby town of Beccles is a shoppers dream, hosting many independent as well as national chain shops. It also has a fairly compact centre, making it easy to get from shop to shop. Beccles has a heated outdoor swimming pool, which is open to the public in the summer months. You are able to walk along the riverside between Geldeston and Beccles, which is very picturesque. To avoid the walk back, the Big Dog Ferry service operates from Beccles Lido, regularly during the summer months and will drop you off at the Locks Inn.
Local pubs, restaurants:
The Locks Inn is famous for being lit by candlelight during the evenings, a nod towards it's many years without electricity. Of course, full mains services are now available, and the pub offers a huge choice of food, together with live entertainment on the lawns during the summer months. Also in the village is the Wherry Inn, a small public house which again offers a wide ranging menu.
Cafes and takeaways:
There are no cafes or takeaways in Geldeston, but Beccles is less than 3 miles away and has an abundance of coffee shops and takeaways.
Other Shops:
Mandy’s Fabulous Pickles operates from Dunburgh Farm, (located on The Street not far from the Wherry Inn) selling a range of over 400 varieties of chutneys, mustards, marmalades and pickles including a prize winning grapefruit and ginger marmalade. Beccles, as already mentioned, has a wide range of shops including a department store and two large supermarkets.
