Surlingham is a small village situated on a bend of the River Yare. It is around 7 miles and 20 minutes drive from central Norwich. Surlingham has a population of around 750 inhabitants. You are so close to a major city yet bypassed by the most of the madding crowd.
Things to see and do:
Being so close to Norwich, you are on the doorstep of all the city has to offer, but still able to retire to the peace and quiet of the village when you have had enough. The nearest point to hire a self-drive dayboat from would be at Freedom Dayboats in Thorpe St Andrew. From here you could cruise right into the city centre, or head out into the tree lined upper reaches of the Yare. The Ted Ellis Trust, based at nearby Wheatfen Broad, is a naturalist's delight with open fens, swaying reeds and wild woodlands where you might see the iconic yellow swallowtail butterfly, elusive Norfolk Hawker dragonfly, the unmistakable cuckoo, and more. Rockland St Mary to the south and Bramerton to the north, are neighbouring villages. Both charming and worth the 30 minute or so walk.
Local pubs, restaurants:
The Surlingham Ferry is on the banks of the Yare. It is on the site of an ancient ferry, though now the only way across the river is by private boat. It is actually a community run pub and is very popular with locals and visitors. It offers an extensive choice of food menu and can be recommended. Live music is held every Sunday fortnight (or so) which tends to start in the late afternoon. Coldham Hall, a pub & restaurant situated by the river, is a short drive away. Food is good and hearty, if a little expensive. Your next nearest public houses are in nearby Rockland St Mary, where the New Inn offers a wide menu, or in Bramerton, at the Waters Edge Inn, a fine dining establishment. Both are around 10 minutes drive away.
Cafes and takeaways:
Teles Patisserie is situated in the village, off Mill Road, tempting you with fine cakes, sandwiches and refreshments.
Other Shops:
A post office and general store is in the centre of the village, located on School Lane.
