Hickling is a beautiful village on the edge of Hickling Broad and indeed has been voted in a survey as one of the ten most idyllic places to live in the UK. It consists of many thatched properties that would not look out of place on a luxury box of chocolates lid. It is a fair size for a village with a population of just under a thousand, though this would increase in high season when holiday accommodation is occupied. It is a 45 minute drive from Norwich.
Things to see and do:
The river above Potter Heigham bridge is particularly attractive and as most of the river traffic is choked off above the bridge, you really feel as though you are cruising through landscape which has not changed for a hundred years. To see the area, self-drive dayboat hire is available from Whispering Reeds boatyard by the hour, half or full day. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust have a nature reserve at Hickling and you can walk the nature trails across the reed and marshland or take a guided boat trip around the Broad. More details

Local pubs, restaurants:
The Greyhound is in the village centre and offers a good choice of food. It is popular with locals and well thought of. The
Pleasure Boat Inn is by the side of the Broad. It has bar food as well as a restaurant, together with occasional live music at weekends.
Cafes and takeaways:
There are no cafes or takeaways in Hickling, but the small town of Stalham is just three miles away. Here you will find Cafe Charlotte on the High Street along with Chinese and Indian takeaways, a kebab house and a fish and chip shop.
Other Shops:
No shops in Hickling, but with Stalham just a five minute drive away, you have access to a Tesco Supermarket, a local butchers, a newsagents and a pharmacy. A GP surgery is available in the town. More information
