South Walsham is another of those sleepy villages, amidst the glorious Norfolk countryside. As such, it's the ideal place if you want to get away from the noise and smells of city living. It lies on the Panxworth and Acle Roads, and is a 25 minute drive from Norwich.
Things to see and do:
Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is a must visit if you like woodland walks and water meadows and wildlife spotting. Measuring 130 acres with over 4 miles of woodland pathways this is the place to see a wildlife garden at its best including a nationally renowned collection of candelabra primulas at their best at Springtime, butterflies, dragonflies, wildfowl etc. The gardens have their own private Broad which is accessible by an Edwardian style river cruiser which operates 20 and 50 minute trips on Sundays or daily through the school holidays. HERE. On similar lines, you're close to Ranworth Broad, and it's Conservation Centre. Here you can see wildlife including the occasional otter, all manner of wildfowl, and a wide variety of butterflies and dragonflies, from the hide on the top floor of the centre. Boat hire is available from Wroxham, around 10 minutes drive on the B1140. Here you can day and picnic boats, canoes, sailboards and rowing boats. Wroxham is also the home of Broads Tours, which operates a passenger sightseeing cruise, if you would rather someone else did the driving.
Local pubs, restaurants:
The Ship Inn is in the village centre and offers a good choice of food. (currently closed)
The Maltsters, Ranworth is a popular public house, by the side of Ranworth Broad. It offers a varied menu, and occasional entertainment.
The Fur and Feathers is in nearby Woodbastwick. It has it's own brewery, and is very well thought of for food. Popular with locals and visitors.
The White Horse, Upton, is a community run pub. Good food is offers and frequent live entertainment.
Cafes and takeaways:
There is a cafe in the Fairhaven Gardens, serving hot and cold snacks and drinks. The nearest takeaways are in Acle, where you will find Acle Spice, and Acle Fish and Chips. Acle also has a Starbucks, Wild Bean and Dunes Riverside cafes.
Other Shops:
No shops in South Walsham, but with Acle just 3 miles away, you have access to The East of England Co-op Supermarket in the town centre. A Marks and Spencer Simply Food outlet is situated at the BP service station, close to the A47. Barclays Bank have a branch here in Acle and you will also find a butcher, hairdressing salon, a newsagents, a post office and a pharmacy. Acle has its own medical practice.. More information
